“Billy, don’t be a twit,” Mirna said. “Look at this pitiful wreck. She’s always been like this and she always will be.”

“Mirna…” Billy cautioned, though somewhat amused at his sister’s assessment.

“Don’t you …” Mrs. Butler said, managing to get two words out this time.

Mirna frowned deeply and threw her hands up in the air. “Oh, give it up. Frankly, I’m ashamed to call this thing my mother.”

“Goddamnit! Let me talk!” Mrs. Butler cussed, much to the shock and utter amazement of everybody in the room. Having accomplished gaining their complete, silent and undivided attention, she looked to her husband and said, “Mel, take me home.”

For the next few moments, Billy, Mirna, Bob and Greg were absolutely still, not daring to utter a word. Mr. Butler nodded to his kids and then led his wife out the door. Billy followed quietly, feeling every bit of the emotional train wreck that had happened before his eyes. This was exhausting. He surmised that even Greg’s kisses would do nothing to repair his shattered life at this moment. Something was over, but he was not certain whether it was his life, his relationship with his mother, or the functionality of his brain.

Slowly, he closed the door and then turned to the others, and with a sigh, said, “Well, that went better than I expected. And I guess you win the bet, Bob.”

Mirna’s head jutted up in surprise. “What?”
